We are seeking a Radio Navigation Engineer to work on our Customers Site (ESA-ESTEC) in the Netherlands. This is a fantastic opportunity to get into one of the most sought-after space agencies in the world.
Main Responsibilities
As Radio Navigation Engineer you will concentrate your activities on the following:
- Support the design, development and R&D activities of Positioning, Navigation, Timing (PNT) and Geolocation systems, including contributions to ESA projects like GALILEO, LEO-PNT and FutureNAV.
- Design, analyse, implement, and test navigation systems, signals, receivers, and related algorithms, including performance assessments using simulations, laboratory tests and field trials.
- Work on radio navigation signals and signal processing, including signal structure, modulation, error correction, synchronisation, multipath and interference mitigation, encryption and authentication.
- Design, develop, and test radio navigation equipment for space and terrestrial applications, such as scientific missions, high-accuracy geodesy, civil aviation and maritime uses.
- Define, procure, and maintain laboratory and test equipment for navigation experiments and support related demonstrations inside and outside ESTEC.
- Support the preparation of technical documents, invitation to tenders, and technical follow-up of industrial contracts and R&D activities.
- Provide specific engineering support to ESA space projects and European industry partners, including validation of designs through analysis, simulations and testing.
- Contribute to ESA’s R&D strategies and programmes, including new concepts like LEO-PNT, multi-layer PNT, 5G/6G NTN positioning, Moon and Mars navigation, deep space navigation and RFI monitoring.
- Participate in standardisation activities and technical working groups to support the development of navigation systems and technologies.
- Support the design, implementation, maintenance and operation of radio navigation simulation tools, test facilities and equipment for evaluating system and receiver performance.
Successful Candidate
Do you think you are the person we are looking for? See below what experience or knowledge you should bring:
- Master’s degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Aerospace Engineering or a related field.
- Strong background and hands-on experience in the design, implementation, and testing of radio navigation systems and equipment.
- In-depth knowledge of satellite navigation systems, ranging and positioning techniques, RF systems, signal processing and digital navigation receivers.
- Relevant experience with GNSS (GPS, Galileo, EGNOS) systems, including signals, receiver technologies and authentication techniques.
- Practical experience using and testing satellite navigation receivers and working with positioning and integrity algorithms.
- Experience with radio navigation simulation and test facilities, including implementation, maintenance and operation for various applications (spacecraft, aircraft, maritime, land mobile).
- Familiarity with commercial simulation software is an advantage.
- Background in areas such as LEO-PNT systems, governmental, telecom, or EO/SAR satellites, space receivers, deep space navigation and geolocation and RFI monitoring.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and in international teams.
- Eligible to obtain an EU personal security clearance from the relevant national authority.
- Candidates must be EU nationals.
