Job Introduction

On behalf of our client, the European Space Agency, we are looking for a skilled Communication Systems & Technologies Engineer to join our team at the esteemed ESA-ESTEC site, in the Netherlands. Your mission would be to provide support to the Agency projects and programs in the area of space system security engineering, with an emphasis on space segment, including system security design, definition and implementation of system security requirements, assessment of vulnerabilities applicable to space systems, recommendation of security mitigations and countermeasures.

Main Responsibilities

As a Communication Systems & Technologies Engineer  you will concentrate your activities on the following:

  • Contribute to the definition, analysis, and consolidation of space system security requirements, particularly for the space segment. 
  • Contribute to the definition of security reference architecture for space systems, with a focus on the space segment. 
  • Support system reviews throughout the projects’ lifecycle on security aspects. 
  • Analyze vulnerabilities, assess their impact, and propose suitable security mitigations and countermeasures. 
  • Analyze evidence of fixes for vulnerabilities. 
  • Assess Requests for Waivers / Requests for Deviation on security aspects and provide recommendations regarding their acceptability. 
  • Organize security audits, vulnerability assessments, and penetration testing activities on ESA projects and programs, analyzing their results (including evidence of findings and corrections). 
  • Propose developments needed to enhance the security of space systems, particularly for the space segment. 
  • Assist the ESA Technical Officer on Research and Development activities in the area of security for space during their lifecycle (writing the Statement of Work, assessing Industry proposals, supervising implementation). 
  • Support Project/System Security Officer (PSSO) or Security Officer (SO). 
  • Support laboratory activities as required. 

Successful Candidate

Do you think you are the person we are looking for? See below what experience or knowledge you should bring:

  • A Master or PhD degree or equivalent in Engineering (preferably in computer science, cyber security, telecom, or aerospace), with strong knowledge and experience in security engineering. 
  • At least 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of space systems, space segment architecture, and spacecraft avionics. 
  • Very good knowledge of security best practices. 
  • Basic knowledge of applied cryptography. 
  • Knowledge of Information Security Management Systems. 
  • Knowledge of CCSDS protocols and standards, particularly SDLS. 
  • Knowledge of RF security is a plus. 
  • Candidates must be eligible for security clearance from an EU Member State national security administration. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are needed, together with a high degree organizational and communication abilities, and comfortable with working in a diverse and multinational team environment.
  • Proficient in the English language, both written and spoken.
  • Knowledge of another EU member state language is an asset.
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the EU.
